Re: Tdap Options for rising 6th graders
Schools in the state of Virginia are requiring that all students
entering the 6th grade receive a tetanus booster before
entering school in the fall.
For those students who will not be 11 years old prior to the new school
year, there are 2 options regarding receiving the Tdap vaccine. FPA
uses Adacel, a Tdap vaccine, which is approved for ages 11-64 years
old. Fairfax County Health Department uses a different Tdap vaccine,
called Boostrix, which is approved for ages 10-18 years old.
Option #1:
FPA will provide you with a letter stating that your child is medically
exempt from Adacel until he/she is 11 years old. When the child is 11
years old, then the child can receive the Tdap vaccine at the time of
his/her annual physical.
Option #2:
Your local health department may carry the Boostrix vaccine for children
10-18 year olds. This vaccine may be offered free of charge at your
local health department. The county often provides clinics at various
locations, such at school libraries etc. For a schedule of those clinic
times please call your local health department.
