FPA presents common vaccine
myths.
The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) presents
useful information about
vaccinations.
HIB Vaccine
Effective immediately, we will be again giving the HIB vaccine
booster at 12-15 months. We had stopped giving this dose due to a
national shortage as a result of the Merck recall about 2 years ago. The
CDC has now recommended that the 4th dose ( 1st three doses are at 2, 4,
& 6 months) be given at this time and to catch other patients who missed
their 4th dose as they come in for their next well check. Please ask
your provider at your next visit.
Pentacel
Starting January 2009 FPA will start to offer Pentacel. Pentacel is
a combination vaccine that combines three vaccines
DTaP,
HIB &
IPV vaccines into one shot.
This shot combines three
vaccines into one shot so that there are fewer shots given. It has been
used safely in Europe for over 10 years. Pentacel can be given at the 2,
4, 6 and 15 month well visit. Please ask your provider at the next well
check about this option.
Monovalent measles, mumps and
rubella
On Dec 15, 2008 Merck will halt production of monovalent measles, mumps
and rubella vaccine. These are separate single dose vaccine for measles,
mumps and rubella. Merck will continue to produce the common combination MMR
vaccine.
TDap for
upcoming 6th Graders
If your child is entering
6th grade and has not turned 11 years old we offer two
options.
Proquad
Proquad is a vaccine that combines the MMR and the Varivax (Varicella or
"chicken pox") vaccine into one vaccine. There is a current nationwide
shortage that is not expected to end until 2009.
We encourage you to do your own research on the
vaccines that is recommended for your child.
A complete list of
vaccines and the corresponding routine well check
schedule is
available.
The CDC vaccine information
sheets for each vaccine is also available.
